*May 25, Sunday, 4:00 p.m.: “NUCLEAR NOMADS” – OREGON’S MARSHALLESE

COMMUNITY, a presentation by David Anitok, President of the Marshallese Society in Oregon

and four other members of the Salem community, on effects on the people of the Marshall

Islands of the 1954 explosion, by the US, of the world’s first hydrogen bomb (that was 100 times

more powerful than the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima), just 75 miles away from the island

of Rongelap, without warning any of the residents there of the dangers of radiation. Sixty years

later they are still coping with the effects of radiation poisoning and unable to access health care

for its members. The presentation at the Salem Friends’ Meeting House, at 490 19th NE (corner

of Breyman), will be followed by a potluck meal including cuisine and musical culture of the

Pacific Islanders.
